Rick Epping
Rick Epping played and taught harmonica during the folk and blues revivals of the 1960's, and was for four years a member of the UCLA Balkan Dance and Music Ensemble. During the 70's he lived in Ireland where he pursued the traditional music, and was the 1975 All-Ireland Harmonica champion. As a member of a folk group there, he appeared often on RTE, UTV and BBC television and radio broadcasts, toured throughout Europe and recorded an album that reached #2 in the Irish charts. In 1998 and 1999, Rick toured in Ireland and Scotland along with harmonicists Brendan Power and Mick Kinsella, performing Irish, blues and original music.
As product manager for Hohner Harmonicas, Rick has, for over 10 years, been traveling to Hohner's factories in Germany and China, supervising harmonica production and assisting in research and design. He has conducted clinics and workshops for Hohner in the United States, Germany and Argentina, and a Hohner Harmonica demonstration video he made in 1994 has been distributed throughout the USA, Europe, Russia and Southeast Asia. Rick is a regular columnist for the Hohner magazine, "Easy Reeding", and is Vice President / USA of Federation Internationale de l'Harmonica.
Brendan
Power
UK-based New Zealander Brendan Power is acknowledged by
many as one of the most creative, skilled & versatile
harmonica players around today. Equally at ease on both
the earthy Blues Harp as well as the sophisticated Chromatic
Harmonica, he tunes them to his own scales to create a
highly original style. He has recorded fifteen solo CDs
to date, in a wide variety of musica genres.
Since he moved to Britain in 1992, Brendan's eclectic
skills and sympathetic ear have made him an in-demand
session player, leading to live and recording work with
artists such as Sting, James Galway, Van Morrison, Paul
Young, Shirley Bassey, John Williams and many more. His
playing is also heard on many Hollywood movie soundtracks
(eg. the 2008 Oscar winning soundtrack for 'Atonement'),
and BBC TV series. He's featured on the internationally-syndicated
Jools Holland Show and toured worldwide, performing in
venues such as China's Great Hall of the People and The
Kremlin.
In addition to his Pop, Jazz & Blues skills, Brendan
is an expert player of Irish traditional music (winning
the 1993 All Ireland Title), and performed for three years
as soloist in the Riverdance Show. He has recorded with
well-known Irish artists such as Donal Lunny, Altan, Paul
Brady, Arkady, Artie McGlynn, Mary Black and others. A
respected harmonica technician & customiser, Brendan
is employed by Suzuki Musical Instruments Co. of Japan
as their International Harmonica Specialist.
Boogie Boys
- trio is a first Polish piano band performing the boogie-woogie
music with a touch of blues of a black origin. An absolutely
incredible sound of two pianos snatches the listeners
and takes them back to the age of the speedy locomotion
and the crazy rhythm of the American reality. Despite
their young age, the pianists Bartek Szopiński and Michał
Cholewiński, accompanied by the youngest musician in the
trio Szymon Szopiński playing drums, feel the vibe of
the boogie-woogie which follows the musical output of
both the original bluesmen and the Polish big beat scene.Their
incredible combination of skill, passion and charisma
together with new astonishing ideas of arranging the old
Polish themes gives an amazing mixture of vivid music,
which, by far, moves the hearts of people of different
age and musical taste. The musicians met in autumn 2002
in one of the numerous clubs in Poznań , where they ended
up jamming on the old piano.Up to now, they have participated
in many important music events, taking part in the XI
Blues Express Festival and giving many concerts both in
Poland and abroad playing next to some of the best boogie-woogie
masters such as Christopher Steinbach, Frank Mushalle
and Axel Zwingerberger. Being the youngest boogie trio
in Europe.
Tinus
Koorn
Jazz harmonica player Tinus Koorn is a student of the
Royal Conservatory in The Hague and one of the few diatonic
harmonica players that take the radical approach of playing
everything on a single diatonic harmonica.
Jens
Bunge
was born September 24, 1963. At the age of 18, he began
to teach himself to play the chromatic harmonica. Influenced
by the recordings of Toots Thielemans, he soon found his
passion for jazz. In the mid 80s, while studying theology
at the University of Heidelberg (Bunge is an ordained
Protestant minister!), he began to perform with local
big bands and jazz groups. The following years saw him
as a guest soloist with the Thilo Berg Big Band featuring
Ack van Rooyen and Barbara Dennerlein (www.barbaradennerlein.com),
with Art Farmer, Bill Ramsey and the German Jazz Orchestra
BuJazzO (http://www.bujazzo.de/), conducted by Peter Herbolzheimer.
Being an untiring globetrotter, Jens Bunge has been playing
his harmonica on all five continents: New York, Chicago,
San Francisco, Montreal, Honolulu, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney,
Singapore, Hong Kong, Bangkok and Cape Town are just a
few of the locations where he appeared as a featured guest
(Picture Gallery).
At the European Harp Festival 1996 and the World Harmonica
Festivals 1997 and 2001 in Trossingen, he conducted the
workshop "jazz on the chromatic harmonica".
Jens
Bunge i Uli Wagner
Founded in 1996, this duo performs mostly at readings,
exhibitions, talk shows...After they had met each other
several times and immediately felt that they were musical
soul mates, Jens Bunge & Uli Wagner founded this duo
in 1996. Since then they have been performing at readings,
exhibitions, talk shows, church concerts and festivals.
Their repertoire spans:
Jazz i swing
Latin jazz
original compositions
The strength of this duo is their sensitivity in handling
different moods. The music creates atmosphere, deepens
or contrasts emotions, is sometimes peppy-frolicsome,
sometimes meditative-dreamy. Therefore it serves as an
ideal frame and support for spoken words, such as readings
of poetry, art exhibitions, receptions or even church
services.

Jack
Cannon Blues Band
"They are the first Hungarian band in the history
of Blues Aperitiv, and they immediately enchanted the
jury and the spectators. No wonder, because it's not easy
to meet a not-American band which plays in such a precise
way.The star ofthe trio is György Zoltai (the singer who
also plays the harp) doesn't imitate the standards, he
creates something new, his own art.But the most important
in Jack Cannon that captured the jury is the perfect harmony
among the members, which makes them able to breathe freely
even within the set boundaries."
Mark
Olbrich-Marc Olbrich Blues Eternity Featuring harmonica
Giles King
The greatest Polish rock artist/composer Z Holdys described
Mark 'Bestia' Olbrich as: "One of the grooviest blues
bassist's around!", and he most certainly is. Mark
'Bestia' Olbrich is a Blues Bassist, Band Leader and Producer. He
performs regularly at the world's most prestigious blues
venues, with some of the best blues artists there are.
Band:
Giles King - harmonica - England's blues harmonica giant

the Year. Pete Miles - blues drums legend. Daniel Smith
- keyboards, John T-Bone Taylor - guitar, Earl Green -

Wojtek
Waglewski /Bartek Łęczycki
The duo of two virtuosos of both the gitar and harmonica.
You cannot hear it from any CDs or radio stations. This
concert is the only opportunity to listen to the VooVoo
leader in such an intimate atmosphere and with such a
beautiful accompaniment, full of blues and jazz impromptus.
This duo is one of its kind!
Wojciech Waglewski - the founder and leader of the
band Voo Voo, guitarist, composer, author and producer
- he works on so many projects and in so many fields,
both with his original band and in other configurations,
that the most dedicated chronicler might have trouble
to keep up with recording everything he does. One of
his latest concert projects is the acoustic performance
in duo with Bartek 'Boruta' Łęczycki. This acoustic
concert is claimed to have its roots in Wojtek's two
performances in duos with Mateusz Pospieszalski (concert
meetings invariably taking place since 2000) and Maciek
Maleńczuk (the concerts entitled 'Koledzy'/'Mates',
taking place since 2007). The first meeting was genuinely
of improvisation character. Second one was soaked with
blues. This meeting, attended to by Bartek Łęczycki
( who took part in 'Mates' session) is in its philosophy
perhaps "a more tamed jazz, which just sticks to
blues, to a song". However, everything here is
marked by the musicians' unbelievable imagination, reflex
and the inclination for 'sound games'.
My Mom Janis
It is a very personal, sometimes tragic and extremely
honest confession and, at the same time, a portrait of
a modern woman. This performance is supposed to face with
Janis Joplin's music and... with realizing dreams. Sixteen
of Janis Joplin songs have been translated into Polish
for the first time by Maciejka Mazan and Daniel Wyszogrodzki.
Cast: Jolanta Litwin-Sarzyńska, currently the Syrena Theatre
actress, musical vocalist, Grand Prix award winner at
song contests in Legnica, Warszawa and Lublin.
Directing - Redbad Klynstra
The actress is accompanied by rock music band consisting
of:
keyboard - Fabian Włodarek,
drums - Seweryn Narożny,
solo guitar - Piotr Szewczenko,
bass guitar - Kornel Jasiński
harmonica - Tomasz Bielecki
OPEN TRIO KAROL SZYMANOWSKI
The trio consists of: Karol Szymanowski - vibraphone, Wojtek Tramowski - guitar, Jarek Michaluk - double bass.
Karol Szymanowski is the world's first vibraphone player
who uses a six-stick playing technique. He has also
created a new, original instrument - a five octave 'vibrophonomarimba'.
He is one of the most important European jazz vibraphone
players, drummer, composer, arranger, pedagogist and
winner of numerous international and national awards.
He has graduated from the Academy of Music in Katowice.
He has added new means of expression taken from the
piano tradition into the traditional ways of playing
the vibraphone, which revolutionized the music vocabulary
concerning vibraphone playing. The Open Trio music comprises
beautiful pastel climates, a lot of space, plenty of
natural vigour flowing through musicians and their instruments.
The concert will include not only jazz standards prepared
for the trio but also original music ideas.
BEATA
KOSSOWSKA
There is no doubt that Beata Kossowska is the fastest
harmonica player. And the harmonica virtuoso as well.
She is also named as Joe Satriani, but not of the guitar,
but of the harmonica. The fact that she moved to Germany
caused that she started working on her own and formed
her own band. Thanks to this, the audience can hear and
learn what Beata is really like. Her band, THE NAT BEAT
reflects and compiles fifteen years of experience on stage.
According to Beata, her style can be placed somewhere
between rock, pop, blues and even jazz or funk. Through
her dynamic playing, she interprets the music in her own
way which cannot be easily classified. She has been performing
on stage for over ten years. She has been giving concerts
in the whole Europe and even in Memphis, the birthplace
of blues. She is also the Hohner artist. It can be said
that her all life has been devoted her music. She has
recorder many CDs with film soundtracks or relaxation
music, which has been performed with both her former band
(Le Blue) and the present United Blues Experience.
Andrzej
Kozłowski
Andrzej Kozłowski professionally plays the... wood saw.
He has been enlisted in the Guinness Book of Records.
He has been performing in the whole Poland. His record
audience, that is 1200 people, gathered at his concert
in Gostyń in May 2008. It was then, when they have broken
the Guinness record. There were twenty-eight saw players,
who came to a little town in the centre of Poland in order
to perform the song 'The Marian Song of Hills and Valleys'
("Pie¶ń Maryjna o górach dolinach"). If asked
about the idea of the wood saw playing, Andrzej Kozłowski
answers that his inspiration was a French film, accidentally
seen a few years ago. There was a scene with the man playing
the saw. "If this man can do it, why can't I try?",
Adnrzej explains. "Since then, I have started practicing
and exploring the mysteries of the saw." He can also
play sixteen other instruments, e.g. jew's harp, mouth
organ or flute, which are made of such materials as plastic
skirting-board.
Why
Ducky?
Their debut took place during the 5th Spring Blues Night
in 2002. The band consists of the experienced musicians,
earlier playing in such groups as Old Timers, Strych,
Sex Piwo i Rock'n'Roll, Bloose Connection, Antykwariat,
Regeneracja, which participated in numerous prestigious
festivals (Blues Express Festival, Rawa Blues Festival,
Blues na Dołku, Spring Blues Night and Festival in Węgorzewo).
The band Why Ducky? was honoured to play with such stars
as John "Broadway" Tucker, Carlos Johnson,
Stan Skibby, Leszek Cichoński, Wojciech Karolak, Tomasz
Szukalski, Loud Jazz Band, PiR2, Ragtime Duo & Company,
Kasa Chorych, Dżem. The music they specialize in is
an example of cheerful pieces with vivid blues, rock'n'roll
and boogie elements. They are enthusiastically greeted
by the audience during the big open air concerts and
intimate club events as well. The many years of practice,
routine and stage experience cause that the band quickly
makes contact with the audience.
"Szulerzy"
In 2001 musicians from 3 well known blues bands decided
to join forces to start a project which would combine
the music of Robert John and John Lee Hooker with modern
blues and a little bit of Slavic soul. Blues, rock 'n'
roll and soul are the ingredients which make the band's
music so original and full of energy. One of the characteristics
of the band is their own songs which are always in Polish.
It is through their songs that they can connect with their
audience. During live shows, regardless whether playing
outdoor events or a club venue, the band invites their
audience to have a good time with them. In 2003, the band
released their debut album entitled "Bez Ciebie"
(BG 1710). What is worth noting is the fact that no band
before had ever released a blues record with Polish lyrics.
In the same year, the band collaborated with Michal Kielaka
on his solo "Tribute to Skiba" (CR 001) album
which was a tribute to the legendary Ryskiek "Skiba"
Skibinski. In 2004, "Gra w piki daje wyniki",
which was a collaboration between Jaromiego Drażewskiego
(Blues Flowers) and Szulerzy, was released. In 2005, the
band released an album , which consisted of ten new original
songs, entitled "Pilnuj się!" (FR 006). Jarosław
Tioskow (Kasa Chorych), Jaromi Drażewski (Blues Flowers),
Maciej Sobczak (Boogie Chilli), Jacek Urlik (Tipsy Drivers),
Adam Kulisz (Coolish Blues Session), Paweł Szymański and
Łukasz Rumpel have all made guest appearances with Szulerzy.
Szulerzy are living proof that real blues is not dead.
If you believe that the blues can not exist without women,
guitars and harmonicas then you will enjoy listening to
Szulerzy.
Band Members:
Alekasandra Więtczak - vocals
Paweł Urowski - bass guitar
Miłosz Szulkowski - drums
Marcin Szulkowski - guitar
Michał Kielak - harmonica

Orkiestra
im. Johanna Straussa
known also as the Orkiestra Symfoników Bydgoskich Marka
Czekały, was formed in 1995. The first performance the
orchestra gave was at the concert bowl in W. Witos park
on August 13th 1995. At first, the orchestra was made
up of 16 musicians, and was conducted by Henryk Wierzchon.
Later, Marek Czekała, who is also a violin player, decided
to become the orchestra's conductor, and by doing so also
become one of a very few people who simultaneously conduct
and play on an instrument. Today, the orchestra is made
up of musicians who play at all of Bydgoszcz's most important
musical institutions like the Pomerainian Concert Hall,
Capella Bydgostiensis and Opera NOVA.
The orchestra has played over 500 concerts in Poland,
and has also travelled abroad (Germany, Lithuainia, and
Sweden) to perform.
Zygmunt Zgraja
- was born in Myslowice. He has written various papers
on the blues harp. He is also a composer and the founder
and leader of the Con Brio Harmonica Trio. He has performed
in numerous duets with other artists. Zgraja took up playing
the harmonica at the age of 14.
Ireneusz
Dudek
- his interpretation of the blues is influenced by rock
'n' roll. He is widely known as Shakin' Dudi. He is both
a singer and blues harp player. Ireneusz started his career
in a blues band which was known as Apokolipsa. Later came
Irjan and the Irek Dudek Blues Sesson. He has played many
concerts and at very many festivals (including Rawa Blues
the largest organized blues event in Europe, which is
organized annually by Ireneusz). 1984 saw a major breakthrough
in his career. Along with guitar player Darek Dusza he
formed a band named Skakin' Dudi. As Shakin' Dudi, the
two released a number of hit singles. The band also released
a full length album called "Zlota Plyta". In
1986, which was when the band was at the peak of its popularity,
Shakin' Dudi called it quits. It wouldn't be until 2001
that Shakin' Dudi would return into the limelight. This
time around, however, it is called the Shakin Dudi Bigband
and it comprises of an 11 person brass section, a piano,
bass and percussion which is backed up by the guitar playing
of Darek Dusza. The reformed band recorded an album for
Universal Records entitled "Plyta Roku". The
album is made up of 12 tracks composed by Dudek and written
by Dusza. The songs on the album range from easy going
swing ballads to punk boogie, from rock 'n' roll to reggae.
The avant-garde of avant-garde one could say. As far as
the bands live concerts are concerned, they are without
a doubt a show not to be missed.
